IVAN Hour @ ENC 2023 Dear Barry: Stories from Barry Shapiro’s NMR New Letters
April 18 @ 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm PDT
FreeHave you ever seen a typewriter? If you are young enough to say “no” then you need to join us in the IVAN suite on Tuesday evening to see one!
Seriously, the late Professor Barry Shapiro, of Texas A&M University is well known to us as the editor of the NMR (later “TAMU”) Newsletter, a monthly collection of bound letters from members of the NMR community, each announcing their opinions and discoveries. Each letter began with “Dear Barry:”
In 2020 Clemens Anklin of Bruker and some colleagues started a personal project to collect all the paper TAMU newsletters and publish them on-line. The majority have been found and these are now available at www.ismar.org/barry-shapiros-nmr-newsletters/. Much of the history of NMR is in these letters.
Tuesday night at 8:00 PM Clemens will be in-person in the IVAN suite to honor Barry and briefly talk about his own project to create this collection. Then we will all get together to reminisce about individual letters that are fun or particularly interesting to us. Do you have a favorite letter? Perhaps it is yours? What really happened? Bring your contribution along for discussion or join us on-line. Real NMR history may not be what we all think!
Host: Clemens Anklin, Bruker
This meeting will be in-person, online via Zoom and live streamed to YouTube.
