Automated Structure Verification: Balancing Speed and Accuracy in NMR Analysis

The topic of our round-table workshop on February 26, 2026, was Automated Structure Verification: Balancing Speed and Accuracy in NMR Analysis.

Advances in NMR instruments and methods now let scientists collect large amounts of 1D and 2D data very quickly. This leaves processing and interpreting that data as the bottleneck in structure verification workflows. Within this landscape, chemists are increasingly turning to automated structure verification (ASV) to speed things up and reduce the burden. However, the downstream cost of incorrect structures alongside stringent requirements of regulatory agencies and publishers mean that efforts to accelerate these workflows cannot come at the expense of accuracy.

In this roundtable workshop, the panelists discuss some possible approaches for an ASV system and see examples of how they’re being implemented and used in modern labs. We will discuss the advantages, caveats and try to answer the most common questions about these systems.

Panelists: Dimitris Argyropoulos (ACD/Labs), Emine Sager (Novartis), Richard Lewis (AstraZeneca) and Kathleen Farley (Solution NMR Analytics).
